In 1870 Frederick Vyner (1847-70) was kidnapped by bandits while travelling in Greece. A large ransom was demanded and in part collected before his eventual murder. In his honour his mother Lady Mary Vyner and his sister Lady Ripon used the unspent ransom to commission two churches and this book of common prayer from the architect William Burges.
The design for this binding is held in the collection of the RIBA.
