We know from contemporary photographs of his home and offices that William Burges lived and worked with this type of chair. They are essentially peasant-made French Cathedral chairs that Burges brought back to London and then decorated. Similar decoration to a chair can be seen above the doors of Cardiff Castle’s banqueting hall, also by William Burges.
The final images courtesy of RIBA, show both un-decorated and decorated rush-seated chairs of this type in Tower House (below) and his Buckingham Street office.
A pair of red painted chairs decorated with a mermaid and a merman were sold by us in 2018 and are now in an important private collection. see our archive.
