With branches in London, New York, Syndey and Melbourne by the mid 1870's, Daniel Cottier was essentially responsible for exporting the Aesthetic Movement.

Comparable chairs, only with zoomorphic front legs, are in the collections of the V&A Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. further examples are known including a set of six sold by Sothebys New York 7th April 1990 lot 90.
This pair utilise the distinctive 'saucer-turned' legs, a detail that can also seen on our 'Evening Cabinet'.
