Who was Charles Locke Eastlake? (1836-1906)

Well first of all we're not talking about his uncle Charles Lock Eastlake without an 'e' in his middle name.

Charles Locke Eastlake with an 'e' was born in Plymouth and lived with his uncle the painter and director of the National gallery, London. He studied with the architect Philip Hardwick and spent his career writing and working as the secretary for the RIBA.

He published his seminal work Hints on Household Taste in 1868. This was then published in America in 1872 and went on to influence a generation of designers giving his name to the 'Eastlake Style'. he also published A History of the Gothic Revival in 1872. he is known as one of the principal exponents of the revival of the Early English or Modern Gothic style.

Whilst his furniture designs were not specifically made at his request, a number of makers reproduced them. His metalwork designs however, were made exclusively by the London maker Benham & Froud. He also designed fabrics for Cowlishaw, Nicol & Co. and wallpapers for Jeffrey & Co. Jewellery from his designs were exhibited by Howell, James & Co. at the London Exhibitions of 1871 and 1872.

We have the honour of being the first to identify a piece of his metalwork, see below.
